The First Goals Were Actually Peach Baskets!
Basketball started with actual peach baskets nailed to a gym railing.
Imagine this: In 1891, James Naismith needed an indoor game and used what he had. He tacked up two peach baskets to the railing of the balcony at the Springfield YMCA gym!
That meant every time someone scored, the game had to stop so a janitor could climb up and retrieve the ball. Talk about a slow-motion replay!
The very first basketball was just a regular soccer ball, too. This was nothing like the polished game you see today for kids!
