Imagine you are on a playground with a massive tire swing, but suddenly, all the teachers vanish! There are zero rules! Would it be a wonderful, fun paradise, or a total disaster? Join Mira and Finn on Philosophy is Not Boring as they tackle a massive, brain-twisting question: What would actually happen if there were no rules at all?
Travel back in time to 1651 to meet an English philosopher named Thomas Hobbes. He lived through the scary English Civil War and believed that without rules, humans would be completely selfish, leading to a terrifying war of everyone against everyone! To stay safe, he said we invented a giant, invisible pinky swear called the Social Contract. But wait! A century later, in 1762, another famous thinker named Jean-Jacques Rousseau completely disagreed! Rousseau believed humans are naturally good and peaceful, and it is actually society that makes people greedy!
Who do you agree with? Are we naturally selfish and need strict rules, or are we naturally good? Discover how every time you invent a game or share a toy with your friends, you are doing deep philosophy right on the playground!
