Ancient Greek Olympics: Glory, Gods, and Games

The Ancient Greek Olympics began in 776 BC in Olympia, held every four years as a religious festival to honor Zeus. Participation was strictly for freeborn Greek men, who famously competed nude. Winners received an olive wreath, but their glory brought them fame and often lavish rewards from their home cities. A sacred truce, the *ekecheiria*, was announced so athletes could travel safely to the site.
