Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire

Genghis Khan, born Temüjin, united the nomadic Mongol tribes in 1206 and founded the largest contiguous land empire in history, stretching from the Sea of Japan to Eastern Europe. His success was due to brilliant military organization, using tactics like smoke signals, and a merit-based system, contrasting with older tribal traditions. The empire, though short-lived as a single entity (c. 1206-1368), fostered the Pax Mongolica, which increased trade and cultural exchange along the Silk Road.
