The Twelve Olympians were the most important gods and goddesses in ancient Greek religion, residing atop Mount Olympus. The group usually included 12 major figures like Zeus and Athena. Their incredible, often dramatic, stories still influence us today!
Did you know that thousands of years ago, people in ancient Greece believed the sky, the sea, and even your own feelings were controlled by super-powerful families of gods and goddesses?
These incredible figures were called the Olympians because they lived way up high on Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece! The Greek gods and goddesses are some of the most famous characters in history, and their stories have influenced everything from our language to our movies. They were immortal, meaning they could never die, but they also had very human-like problems—they argued, had favorite kids, and sometimes played tricky jokes on each other! We know most about them from epic poems like Homer's *Iliad* and *Odyssey*.
Mira says:
"Wow, Finn! Imagine having a family where your dad is the king of the sky and throws lightning bolts when he’s mad, and your aunt controls the whole ocean! These gods were powerful, but they also had to deal with messy family drama, just like us, but on a super-divine scale!"
What Are the Olympians? The 12 Main Greek Gods!
In ancient Greek religion, the most important gods and goddesses were called the Twelve Olympians.
There wasn't *always* one exact list, but the main group usually included Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Hermes, and either Hestia or Dionysus.
These 12 ruled from Mount Olympus after winning a huge, ten-year-long war against the older generation of gods called the Titans.
Mind-Blowing Fact!
Even though he was super powerful and Zeus's brother, Hades, the god of the Underworld (the land of the dead), wasn't technically an Olympian because he didn't live on Mount Olympus!

Meet the Sky King: Zeus and His Powerful Siblings
The leader of the Olympians was Zeus, the King of the Gods! His weapon was the mighty thunderbolt, and he controlled the sky, weather, law, and justice. He was the youngest son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, but he grew up to overthrow his father.
Zeus's brother, Poseidon, ruled the seas, oceans, rivers, and was also known for causing earthquakes. You can usually spot him holding his giant three-pronged fishing spear called a trident.
Zeus's other brother was Hades, ruler of the dark Underworld. Though important, he stayed away from the party on Mount Olympus!
The Queen and the Harvest Goddess
Hera, Zeus’s sister and wife, was the Queen of the Gods! She watched over marriage, family, and childbirth. She was known for being very jealous of Zeus’s many adventures outside their marriage.
Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, and the seasons. Her sadness when her daughter Persephone was taken to the Underworld was said to cause winter—so we have her to thank for our yummy food!

The ancient Greeks used these myths to explain things they didn't understand, like why lightning strikes, where seasons come from, and why people fall in love! The gods were like a huge, dramatic answer key to the universe!
