Marco Polo's journey to China was an epic expedition starting in 1271 along the famous Silk Road trade routes across Asia. He spent 17 years in China serving Kublai Khan! Learn how he crossed deserts and mountains in this amazing adventure.
Imagine leaving your home in Italy and not seeing it again for twenty-four years! That's what the brave explorer Marco Polo did when he set off for the mysterious land of China!
Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy, around 1254. He grew up around the exciting world of merchants, where people traded valuable things like jewels and silk. His father and uncle had already traveled way out east and met the mighty ruler of China, Kublai Khan. When they returned to Venice, they told stories that made everyone’s eyes go wide! In 1271, young Marco, who was just 17 years old, joined his father and uncle for the most incredible journey of his life across Asia.
Finn says:
"Whoa, a 24-year trip? That’s longer than kindergarten, elementary, AND middle school combined! Marco Polo must have packed the best travel snacks for that adventure along the Silk Road!"
What is the Silk Road and Why Was It Important?
Marco Polo didn't travel in a car or on a plane! He traveled along a famous network of paths called the Silk Road.
The Silk Road was a huge chain of trade routes connecting the East (like China) with the West (like Europe). It wasn't just *one* road, but many trails weaving across deserts, mountains, and seas.
It was called the Silk Road because beautiful, high-quality silk from China was one of the most desired items traded along these paths. But they traded way more than silk for kids to know about—like spices, jewels, and ideas!
Mind-Blowing Fact!
The journey Marco Polo's family took was so long and dangerous that when they finally arrived in China, Kublai Khan asked them to bring back 100 Christian priests, but only two actually started the trip, and they soon turned back!
Marco Polo's Voyage: Incredible Numbers
Getting to China was a giant adventure! The Polos sailed across the Mediterranean Sea and then traveled overland through places like Turkey, Persia (now Iran), and Afghanistan.
They followed the Silk Road through the super-dry Gobi Desert. Marco Polo wrote that crossing this desert could take as long as one whole year!
When they finally reached Kublai Khan’s summer palace in Shangdu (near modern Zhangjiakou), it took them about three and a half years just to get there!

Marco traveled to faraway provinces in China, seeing incredible sights like the city of Quinsay (now Hangzhou) and the bustling port of Quanzhou.
